Women’s soccer players earn weekly honors
VCU junior goalkeeper Lauren Hardison (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill High School) was named CAA Player of the Week, and freshman midfielder Megan Flanagan (Franktown, Colo.) earned conference rookie of the week honros.
Hardison allowed one goal in 230 minutes of play in a 2-0 triumph over George Mason and a 2-1 overtime victory against Towson.
Flanagan scored a goal in both contests, which proved to be the difference in each. She has three goals and one assist for the Rams, who are looking for their fifth straight win Friday against UNC Wilmington.
Relancio leads Rams at golf tournament
Senior Manuel Relancio (Corrientes, Argentina) finished in a tie for seventh place, shooting a 4-under 212 for the Rams in the inaugural Mattaponi Springs Shootout hosted by VCU.
Jens Fahrbring (Sollentuna, Sweden) shot a 220, and Daryl Chappell (Richmond, Va./Dinwiddie High School) had a 223 in the three-day event.
National powerhouse Wake Forest won the tournament, while the Rams finished in 12th place of 15.
The team travels to Cincinnati to compete in the Xavier Invitational.
Twice as nice for rookie volleyball player
Ana Luiza de Borja was selected as the CAA Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, helping the Rams sweeps of James Madison and George Mason last weekend.
The victories helped the Rams end long losing streaks to the Dukes and Patriots and pushed the team’s overall record above .500. The Rams look to continue their winning streak at 7 p.m., Friday at Georgia State.
Rams run to strong finishes in Northern Virginia
Sophomore Danielle Williams (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem High School), senior Emily Thompson (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle High School), sophomore Libby Little (Spotsylvania, Va./Courtland High School) and Evan Dove (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian High School) finished in the top 24 at last weekend’s George Mason Cross-Country Invitational.
Junior Cary Chaffee (Richmond, Va./Hermitage High School) was the first Ram to finish in men’s cross-country at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University, an 8K race that featured 300 runners.
Rams club hockey open with a win
The VCU ice hockey team opened its season with a 5-1 win over William and Mary.
Brian Sutton’s second-period goal, which put the Rams on top 2-1, proved to be the difference.
Goaltender Jeremy Sacra made 20 saves for the Rams, who tested the Tribe goalie 68 times. Ryan Odell, Jon Flakowicz and Arthur Kingdom also scored goals.
The Rams take on cross-town rival Richmond at Skate Nation Plus in Short Pump, 9 p.m. Friday.
