The university administration should act quickly to put into effect before next semester a recent resolution passed by the Monroe Park Campus Student Government Association to extend the add-drop period at the beginning of the semester from one week to two.

Though some may consider the extension problematic due to the amount of course material that can be missed in the first week of class, it is nothing compared to having to be stuck for the rest of the semester in a class you don’t like because you didn’t have time to get an override before the Friday deadline. The first week of classes often passes all too quickly, and it is difficult to get a feel for a class in the first week alone, where most time is spent reviewing the syllabus.

Unlike other lofty goals that might require too much funding to be rooted in reality, this commonsense measure has zero cost and huge benefits. With a caveat that students are responsible for making up material missed in the first week of class, an extended add-drop deadline would improve the university experience while giving students the flexibility they need to determine the course of their semester.
