The city of Richmond has installed a new traffic signal at the intersection of West Franklin and Shafer streets.

The signals were installed to increase pedestrian safety in the area, according to an e-mail by Paul Timmreck, senior vice president for finance and administration.

According to the e-mail, VCU expects a transitional period for pedestrians and motorists to adapt to the new signal.

During that period the VCU Police Department will monitor the intersection closely to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians, according to Timmreck’s e-mail.

The VCU police will also “step up” enforcement of the speed limit in reaction to motorist’s speeding on the 900 block of West Franklin Street.

Other possible enforcement measures include additional signage and intermittent radar.

The new light controls traffic traveling eastbound on West Franklin Street and traffic turning northbound onto Shafer Street.

VCU requested and paid for the installation of the traffic signal.
