Lyrics can’t save “Complex Simplicity”

While listening to Teedra Moses’ new album, “Complex Simplicity,” all I could think of were the original songs she sampled.

“Complex Simplicity” is a mixture of rhythm & blues and hip-hop. The singer/songwriter put aside her job as an assistant stylist to the stars to concentrate on music with producer Pauli Pol, who is best known for his work on the Black Eyed Peas’ debut single “Joints & Jam.

The music used snippets of artists such as Eric B. and Rakim as well as OutKast and Cherrelle. For the most part, Complex Simplicity was unfulfilling.

Moses does not shy away from expressing her emotional vulnerability. She knew exactly what to say in her songs — unfortunately the music choices did not agree.

The songs with touching subjects of romance and crushes — “No more tears,” “For a life time” and “Be your girl” — were the most notable.

There are moments of pure pleasure listening to the lyrics from this New Orleans native, but they are often conflicting with the music choice.
