Senior McColm Cephas poured in two goals for the Rams to beat West Virginia’s Mountaineers 2-1 in the Nike/Alltel Classic soccer match Aug. 29.

Cephas, who is currently sharing the Colonial Athletic Association’s Co-Player of the Week honor with Steve Alabi of George Mason University, scored off an assist by Matthew Delicate minutes into the game. West Virginia’s Jarrod Smith struck not long after and the game remained tied until Cephas, aided by Cristian Neagu, delivered the winning goal with seven minutes remaining.

“We had our chances, but our inexperience showed,” said West Virginia Mountaineer’s interim head coach Mike Seabolt following the match. “We have to get to the point when losing is unacceptable, and the guys know it.”

Rams head coach Tim O’Sullivan explained that early in the season, the level of play is limited.

“We have a good talent base,” he said. “But also some things we need to improve. This win buys us time.”

The Rams needed little time to secure another victory during the Classic, shutting out Clemson 2-0 with two goals near the end of the first half. Sunday’s win positioned VCU 2-0-0 for the season.

The Rams currently rank 15th in the College Soccer News Top 30, 10th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas rankings and 12th in Soccer America’s top 25. Cephas’ contribution to VCU’s wins earned him the Most Valuable Player honor during the Classic.
