“Phone Booth”
Colin Ferrel plays a publicist with an aversion to the truth who gets trapped in a phone booth in the 81-minute thriller. Among which, is one that he was been feeding to his gorgeous wife (Radha Mitchell) and his cute young girlfriend (Katie Holmes), all of whom are brought into the plot. Kiefer Sutherland, who many of us know from Fox’s hit series “24,” is the voice of the caller and proves that acting is as much about voice as it is about physical elements. The movie’s running time is 81 minutes. It accomplishes what it set out to do and making it any longer would have been unnecessary. If nothing else, this movie will make you think twice about stepping into a phone booth. “Phone Booth” came in No. 1 at the box office this weekend.
“What a Girl Wants”
Surely I’m not the only one who finds Amanda Bynes desperately annoying. Her voice and physical comedy tactics in this movie are helplessly overdone. The plot, however, is a charming one. Daphne (Bynes) decided to go on a quest to find her estranged father, played by Colin Firth, who turns out to be British nobility. Daphne stumbles through the process of trying to fit in. In the process she wins the admiration and, of course, all the hearts of England. The movie is a comedy, but I only got one good laugh when Daphne’s grandmother says, “No hugs dear, we’re British. We only show affection to dogs and horses.” For anyone who has ever been to England, they would know just how true this is. In fact, there are some restaurants that allow dogs, but not children. “What a Girl Wants” is about an hour too long.
“Ghosts of the Abyss”
Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find a theater that is showing “Ghosts of the Abyss” due to the 3-D nature of the film. Regardless, James Cameron, director of “Titanic” and “The Abyss,” directed “Ghosts of the Abyss,” which despite the misleading title, is not a horror movie. In this primarily unscripted movie, Billy Paxton and a group of highly qualified divers and sub teams go more than 2 miles under the sea to explore the remains of the Titanic. The movie is shot in documentary style, so unless you have an avid interest in the Titanic or the newest underwater technology, you might want to save your time and money. New cameras called ROV’s are used in this movie to show the audience more of the inside of the Titanic, but apparently aren’t used to their fullest potential. This movie runs 59 minutes. The film is only showing on select IMAX and 3-D screens.
