Women’s Basketball sinks eight point victory against Towson

VCU Women’s Basketball, now 8-10 overall (5-4 in the CAA), defeated Towson University (1-17, 0-9) 545-46 in a game that saw three Rams players score in the double digits.

Leading the Rams in points was center Candice Phelps, who went 6-12 during the game.

Leading the Rams in points was center Candice Phelps, who went 6-12 during the game. Phelps also grabbed seven rebounds and three assists in the outing. Phelps played 24 minutes for VCU. Phelps is currently averaging 21.8 minutes a game and shooting 44.8 percent for VCU. She holds third place in points on the team.

Just behind Phelps was Maria Giovannetti, who shot 4-11 including one three pointer to bring in 11 points for VCU. Giovannetti also had five rebounds and four assists against Towson with 32. Giovannetti, who is just behind Phelps on the team in points at fourth place, is currently shooting 35 percent.

Also scoring in the double digits for VCU was Cyndy Wilks, who had 10 points after going 2-5 and landing six of her seven free throw attempts. Wilks had three rebounds and four assists as well in 28 minutes. Wilks is the second highest scorer on the team this season. Wilks has tallied 254 points for the Rams this season and is averaging 14.1 a game.

Also pulling in numbers for VCU was Kristine Austgulen, who had 14 rebounds during the game. Austgulen went 3-10 and made 3-4 free throws, earning nine points in 33 miuntes of play. Austgulen is currently the point leader for VCU. Austgulen has 326 points this year, which averages out to 18.1 a game. Austgulen also has the highest shooting percentage on the team with 49.8.

Leading Towson University was Mia Chapman, who had 17 points in 40 minutes of playtime. Chapman went 5-15, all of which where three-pointers. Chapman also went 2-3 from the foul line. The second highest scorer for the Tigers was Kyva Jones who went 4-8, and brought in a total of nine points. Armina Fazlic led Towson in rebounds with seven in her 15 minutes of play.

In the beginning of the game, both teams would trade the lead back and forth. However, the Rams would see a 10-0 run that would eventually send the team into the locker room up by seven (27-20).

VCU began the second half of the game with an 11-0 run. Towson was unable to get closer than five points to VCU.

VCU shot 39.2 percent overall, with a 23.1 three-point percentage. VCU shot 78.6 percent from the foul line while Towson only shot 60 percent. Towson shot 34.8 percent from the field, and 31.3 percent from outside.

Women’s Basketball plays Old Dominion Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Siegel Center.
