In response to Terry Burton’s “Uncle Same wants you!”

Terry Burton’s Op/Ed piece, “Uncle Sam wants you! Whether you like it or not” (Jan. 21), fails to mention a very important factor in Congressman Charles Rangel’s (D-N.Y.) reasoning for the reinstatement of the draft. In a New Year’s Eve Op/Ed piece in The New York Times, Rangel associates the disproportionate amount of black and poor volunteers in America’s Army and Bush’s eagerness to fight a war.

Regardless of one’s opinion on the Iraq situation, it is unfortunate that Rangel has already been accused of “playing the race card.”
