Big Heads, VCU Rams edition

VCU freshman guard Briante Weber is so quick, he seemingly appears to be in more places than one at times. He literally will be, in a sense, Saturday.

During a staff-wide meeting last Sunday at the Student Media Center on Broad Street,  Commonwealth Times photo editor Chris Conway proffered the idea that, through The CT coffers, The CT should help sponsor the creation of large, thick-cardboard head-cutouts of members of the VCU men’s basketball team to help spark school spirit.

Initially, it’s fair to say the rest of the staff was part intrigued, part skeptical.

But — doubters be damned — Conway made them happen with the help of a roommate who works with a local printing company — and convincing the powers that be to allocate the funds. And just in time, as it turns out, as VCU faces bitter arch-nemesis Old Dominion Saturday night at what will surely be a deafening, sold-out Stuart C. Siegel Center Saturday night.

The signs will be given to VCU’s official fan group, the Rowdy Rams, to distribute and the signs will hopefully be kept so that they can be used as part of a growing collection moving forward.

The addition of the heads will add another tangible effect to VCU’s already impressive student section, and will give television cameras another perfect thing to focus their lenses in on to help further the notion that the CAA — from players to fans — is one of the premier mid-major conferences in the country.
