In honor of No-Shave November, The CT will tracked the beard cultivation progress of four VCU students who will abandoned their razors for the entire month. (Follow their progress here.)

Finale

Aaron Mauck

Aaron Mauck

Theater – Freshman

“There’s been a lot of growth for me as a person, and a lot of growth on my face. All and all, I’ve done a damn good job,” Mauck said of his No-Shave November results. He extends one piece of advice to all future beard-growers: “It’s commitment, a symbiotic relationship. You can’t struggle against it; you have to embrace it. If you have full confidence in your beard, your beard will have full confidence in you.”

James Patterson

James Patterson

AFO – Freshman

With No-Shave November coming to a close, Patterson is enjoying relative noteriety for his participation in the month long Spectrum Scruff feature. “People will be like, ‘Oh, you (are) in the newspaper!’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, you know.” Although he employs descriptors such as  “shabby” and “peach fuzz” to describe his razor-less results, Patterson vows to keep his no-shave pact going until Christmas, at least.

Travis Risinger

Travis Risinger

Marketing – Sophomore

Risinger’s competitive nature comes through when looking back on his No-Shave November experience. When asked about his results, Risinger responded, “At least I did better than the freshmen,” (referring to his fellow Scruffers pictured to his left). Risinger does concede that he “wishes he had a beard like Sean’s,” (referring to his fellow Scruffer pictured to his right) and that Williams’ beard is “too manly.”

Sean Williams

Sean Williams

Psychology – Senior

No-Shave November may be over, but Williams is dedicated to keeping his beard thick deep into the cold winter months. And though it was a drastic lifestyle change for him, Williams appreciates the acceptance for grizzly man beards that comes annually each November. “It’s nice to have a month where it is socially acceptable to grow a beard, because for some reason, it’s just not the rest of the year.”
