RICHMOND- Matt Janning hit a three with 45 seconds remaining and thanks to defensive stops and free throws, no. 2 Northeastern was able to hold off no. 7 Hofstra in double overtime, 74-71.
In regulation, Janning assisted freshman Kauri Black’s lay up with six seconds remaining to tie the game at 52.
After fighting their way into overtime, the Huskies were the ones who appeared to have the game locked up in the first overtime when Chaisson Allen hit two free throws giving Northeastern the lead.
Hofstra, not to be outdone, responded when Cornelius Vines sank a fall-away three ball with just 14 ticks left on the clock. When Northeastern couldn’t convert on the other end, the game went to a second overtime tied at 60.
With two of their top guards, Chaz Williams and Vines, fouling out, the Pride found the double overtime period to high a mountain to climb.
Janning hit the big three and Hofstra’s Greg Washington had his three blocked sealing the deal on Northeastern’s escape into tomorrow’s semifinal.
Janning was fantastic, leading all scorers with 26 points. Manny Adako added 13 to the Huskies’ total.
CAA Player of the Year Charles Jenkins led the Pride with 24 to go along with 11 from Vines and Washington.
Northeastern will play the winner of tonight’s James Madison-William & Mary game in tomorrow’s second semifinal.
