During the 2009-2010 season, more fans have shown up to watch VCU basketball than any other season in history.
Tuesday night, VCU coach Shaka Smart took the opportunity to thank the students and fans as he invited them out to Chili’s on VCU’s campus for a free dinner and a Q&A session with the coach.
“The connection between the students and our program and our players is phenomenal. It is a relationship that we only want to continue to build,” Smart said.
It was the first event of its kind in the history of the program and a group of about 100-150 turned out to eat and hear what the coach had to say.
“Number one; it was an opportunity to get out among our fans and supporters … and say thank you,” Smart said.
During the 7:30-8:30 event, Smart broke down the season, the team, talked about recruiting and commented on what the men’s basketball schedule would look like for next season.
“I thought it was really great that he would come out here an have a chat session. I think the food was a great touch because it attracted people, but it was interesting to hear stuff you normally wouldn’t hear,” said VCU student Damir Kacapor.
Kacapor, a freshman from Bosnia, said he considers himself a big fan and says he has been to every home game this season.
The attendees were treated to regular and boneless wings, mini buffalo chicken sandwiches and tortilla chips, as well as non-alcoholic beverages.
The event was a hit with many and Smart says that he plans to make a similar event a regular opportunity for students and fans.
“It was nice to see coach getting involved with the students,” said VCU freshman Scott Wyant. “I think (if they had it every week) there would be an even bigger turnout than you had tonight. I think it would be awesome to have something every week.”
There are no official plans on future scheduling of a similar event, but according to Smart it is an idea he is excited about perusing.
The Rams close the regular season out on the road at Old Dominion on Saturday. The game tips off at 4 p.m. and will be nationally televised on ESPN 2.
