Pedestrian safety
Tips for pedestrians:
- Obey and understand all traffic crosswalk signals and signs. They are there for pedestrian safety and it is the law.
- Cross at the green, not between.
- Use crosswalks at intersections.
- Do not cross against a signal, or from between parked cars.
- Avoid crossing at mid-block.
- Solid red signals mean do not cross.
- Be sure to be seen by drivers, establish eye contact.
- At night, wear light colored clothing and reflective devices to be visible to motorists.
Tips for motorists:
- Stop for all pedestrians crossing in a marked or unmarked crosswalk, it is the law.
- Drive at a safe speed and be aware of the pedestrian activity.
- When turning left at an intersection, check to the left to make sure there are no pedestrians.
- When turning right, check both ways to ensure there are no pedestrians nearby,
- Wait until the pedestrian has completely cleared the intersection before proceeding.
- If another vehicle is stopped at a crosswalk, slow down and look for pedestrians.
