The Latino Student Association held a date auction Thursday night in the Virginia Rooms in the University Student Commons. The auction’s proceeds were donated to the Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund.

Laura Zalles, a sophomore biochemistry major and recruitment chair for LSA, said the date auction was one of three larger events the LSA hosts throughout the year. LSA hosts forums and game or movie nights in addition to their general body meetings.

Zalles said the LSA co-sponsors with other student organizations for larger events like the date auction.

“We try to get involved with a lot of other cultural organizations,” Zalles said. “We asked the leaders of other organizations to ask their members, ask their friends (to get involved).”

The 2010 Homecoming Queen, Armaghan Jahangiri, who was sponsored by LSA, participated in the date auction and marked the end of the event.

LSA President Manuel Ugarte said about 130 students attended the date auction and LSA raised about $600 for the Haiti Relief Fund.

“We are really excited that it went so well, we had a great turnout,” Zalles said. “Seeing this I definitely think we’re going to do more charity events like this and make it an annual thing.”
