Hip-hop artist Drake will perform at VCU’s 2010 Homecoming concert held at the Stuart C. Siegel Center on Feb. 3.
On Jan. 19, the ticket line outside of the Breakpoint game room at the University Student Commons stretched upstairs and almost out the door.
Drake, 23, jump-started his music career when he released his February 2009 mixtape “So Far Gone,” featuring popular names like Lil’ Wayne, Bun B and Petersburg’s Trey Songz. Its success spawned an EP and subsequent single, “Best I Ever Had.” The song, which has earned two Grammy award nominations, peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
On “Forever,” off the “More Than a Game” soundtrack, Drake rubbed shoulders with hip-hop’s elite, delivering rhymes with Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne and Eminem, furthering his respect as an artist.
After a bidding war, Drake signed with Lil’ Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment, under Universal Records, and set out on the America’s Most Wanted tour.
His work in 2009 lays the foundation for a highly anticipated debut, solo, studio album, “Thank Me Later,” due to hit stores in March.
VCU’s 2010 Homecoming Concert featuring Drake takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 3 at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $13 for VCU students and $36 for VCU general public.
