MEN’S BASKETBALL

VCU will play in the inaugural Cancun Challenge, which begins Nov. 16 and ends Thanksgiving weekend. Because VCU has been selected as one of the “host” teams, the Rams will play two games at home before they leave for Mexico. The Rams will play the Citadel at the Stuart C.

Pick’em Week 1

The time has come once again-college football season starts this weekend with the NFL slated to begin soon. With that in mind, the weekly pick’em is back! Last year’s champion, Matt Doyon, is looking to defend his crown (and his new job title) against the sports editors and “The Aftermath” co-host Alex Dynan.

Suck it up, Bud Selig

Every now and then, I make mention of a good (or a bad, but entertaining) conversation I hear on sports radio.

I recently heard a discussion about the withdrawal of baseball from the Olympics, starting in 2012. One conclusion the show’s host and guest came to was that baseball was being pulled, because the world’s best players are unable to play-therefore, baseball no longer has the star power or the drawing power of sports such as basketball and soccer.

Move over, Florida-there’s a new sheriff in town. The Bulldogs have one of the best offenses in the country, led by quarterback Matt Stafford and running back Knowshon Moreno, and a defense that packs a punch.

‘The Gingham Dog’ to premiere Friday

Although almost 40 years have passed since the premier of Lanford Wilson’s “The Gingham Dog,” the controversial play still retains its historical and cultural significance. Audiences still will find the play relevant when it premieres at VCU’s Shafer Street Playhouse Friday.

VCU, Philip Morris deal strange but ‘usual?’

The New York Times painted a shameful picture of VCU May 2008 by printing a controversial story about the university accepting research grants from Richmond-based tobacco company Philip Morris.

The New York Times stated that “a contract with extremely restrictive terms” was signed with Philip Morris.
