Election alert e-mails intended to remind Virginia registrars to do a good job actually impeded their work.

Nancy Rodrigues, secretary of the State Board of Elections, said Tuesday registrars in Fairfax County, Newport News and Richmond County complained of being deluged with up to 1,000 e-mails in the span of a few hours.

Richmond registrar J. Kirk Showalter said her staff were kept from answering phone calls and doing other business because of the e-mails. The group behind it said it was trying to help.

Baltimore-based TrueVote.US sent out thousands of e-mails urging supporters to contact registrars about ensuring the fairness of the vote.

Kevin Zeese, the group’s executive director, says registrars’ names have been removed from its mailing list.
