Safety is a hot topic on campus right now. The FBI recently released its 2007 Uniform Crime Report statistics with data about crimes on campuses throughout the country. VCU has released its annual Campus Safety Report. The assault of four students on Sept. 26 brought attention to student safety. We asked students how safe they feel on and around campus, especially at night.

“I transferred here from Norfolk, so it being a city college, I tried to prepare myself to attend school in a metropolitan area and try to limit how much time I’m outside by myself very late . I use the escort service. It might take you awhile, but you’ll get where you need to go.”

Jessica Danbruch, communication arts major

“I feel that campus is pretty safe if you’re with friends but by yourself it’s a little scary at night. So, my best advice is to have friends around you all the time.”

Anthony Nguyen, chemistry and pre-pharmacy major

“I hear some people got robbed a couple of weeks ago. I’ve kind of walked with a group of people instead of myself. Just be careful out there.”

Omar Nasser, biology major

“I feel very safe. Usually, I’m not worried at all. I feel like if you’re smart about where you are and keeping a group around you and making good decisions about where you go, you stay pretty safe.”

Matt Leahy, communication arts major

“I feel safe. I don’t really walk that much at night, but I know that if I do, I’ll be fine. I’ll be OK. The security around here – it’s not tight, but it’s enough to keep us safe . The police (and) campus security will protect us. I’m really confidant about that.”
