A note from the opinion desk
As we commemorate
the fifth anniversary of
the War in Iraq, I decided
it would be best to hand
over my section to my
good friend Mark Twain.
Twain tried to publish
The War Prayer before
his death in 1910, but
“Harper’s Monthly” held
the story, not publishing
it until 1916. About the
rejection, he wrote,
“I don’t think the prayer
will be published in my
time. None but the dead
are permitted to tell the
truth.”
