The VCU emergency warning siren sounded on Monroe Park Campus Tuesday night for less than a minute.

The siren also was rumored to have sounded Wednesday morning, however, VCU authorities have not yet confirmed the second siren blast.

The sirens are supposed to alert students on VCU’s Monroe Park and MCV campuses in the case of an emergency.

As of press time, no campus emergency has reportedly taken place at either time, nor was there a test being conducted. VCU officials posted an alert shortly after the first siren blast attributing the accidental blasts to a technician working on the siren on top of James Branch Cabell library.

There is an official test of the full emergency system scheduled for noon on Wednesday Feb. 6. The test will encompass the siren system along with text-messaging alerts and other emergency communications systems.

Since the sirens’ initial installation and the first test this past fall, eight additional sirens have been added to the system.

During the Feb. 6 test, all 10 sirens will blare for two minutes followed by a one-minute “all clear” even tone to end the test.

The sirens will be tested each semester along with text messages, digital signs, e-mails and Web site information that are part of an enhanced, rapid, multilevel system for communicating emergency information to students, VCU employees, parents and university neighbors.
