YouTube isn’t just a place for funny clips or indie productions – it’s also an excellent way to check out upcoming movies. In this case, the trailer for the film “300” is my focus. Opening with deep and ominous choruses, we see fluttering images that convey a sense of something threatening. We soon learn that a force of a million men from the Persian Empire threaten the city-states of Greece. The only thing that stands between them is a band of 300 Spartan warriors, considered by some to be the finest in history. They are looking to buy time for the rest of Greece, while anticipating their own deaths.
The movie is based on the actual Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C., with creative influences from the writer of the “Sin City “comics. The Spartans will attempt to hold a critical pass through the mountainous coast, hoping their inevitable sacrifice will result in the eventual triumph of the Greeks over the Persians and their emperor, Xerxes.
This famous last stand of 300 versus 1 million looks to be a big hit this March. The visuals alone are catchy. Combine that with testosterone-driven dialogue: “Give to them nothing! And take from them – everything!” commands Spartan King Leonidas, as the Spartans encounter a wave of Persian soldiers. It looks like a repeat of 2005’s successful “Sin City” may be upon us.
