LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State star forward Tyrone Nelson was indicted on felony charges stemming from allegations that he robbed a pizza delivery man in August.

Nelson faces a third-degree felony charge of robbery and a fourth-degree felony charge of conspiracy to commit robbery.

Nelson was the team’s leading scorer (17.8 points per game) and rebounder (8.7) last season and a first-team all-WAC pick.

Baseball

NEW YORK – After all those errors in the World Series, a Detroit Tigers pitcher won a Gold Glove.

Kenny Rogers, whose smudged left hand created a lot of suspicion during the World Series, won his fourth straight Gold Glove and fifth overall.

Tigers teammate Ivan Rodriguez won his 12th Gold Glove, extending his record for catchers. Seattle right fielder Ichiro Suzuki, Minnesota center fielder Torii Hunter and Oakland third baseman Eric Chavez won the awards for the sixth straight season.

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and Toronto center fielder Vernon Wells won for the third time in a row, Texas first baseman Mark Teixeira won for the second consecutive season and Kansas City second baseman Mark Grudzielanek was a first-time winner.

Also, St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Jim Edmonds filed provisionally for free agency, awaiting a decision by the team on his $10 million option for 2007.

Cardinals pitcher Mark Mulder, who had surgery in September to repair a partially torn rotator cuff, also filed, as did Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Kenny Lofton, San Diego catcher Mike Piazza and San Francisco outfielder Steve Finley.

DETROIT – After turning around the Tigers during his first five seasons, Dave Dombrowski was given a four-year contract extension that runs through 2011.

HOUSTON – The Astros gave general manager Tim Purpura a one-year contract extension, a deal that runs through the 2008 season.

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies exercised their $2.5 million option on right-hander Byung-Hyun Kim for next season.

Golf

ATLANTA – Look at all the fun Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are missing.

An end-of-the-year bash for the top 30 on the PGA Tour money list turned into a final exam at the Tour Championship. Retief Goosen and Joe Durant shared the lead at 2-under 68, the highest score to lead an opening round at East Lake, and only six other players managed to break par in cool, blustery conditions.

Davis Love III bogeyed the first three holes on his way to his highest score to par as a pro, a 12-over 82 with no birdies.

The two biggest stars on the PGA Tour decided to take this week off _ Mickelson also skipped last year _ taking some shine off the final tournament of the year. They spared themselves a round so challenging that it was the highest score to lead the first round at East Lake since the Tour Championship first came here in 1998.

Tennis

PARIS – Tommy Robredo and David Nalbandian both claimed places in the season-ending Masters Cup: Robredo with a victory, Nalbandian without playing.

Robredo beat Paul-Henri Mathieu of France 6-4, 7-6 (1) in the third round of the Paris Masters to clinch his berth, while Nalbandian, who skipped the tournament, advanced because James Blake lost 6-4, 6-2 to Tommy Haas.

HASSELT, Belgium – Defending champion Kim Clijsters cruised into the quarterfinals of the Gaz de France after beating Martina Mueller 6-3, 6-2.

Third-seeded Ana Ivanovic defeated Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3.

QUEBEC CITY – Top-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia advanced to the quarterfinals of the Bell Challenge, beating American Vania King 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Jankovic will face eighth-seeded Olga Poutchkova of Russia in the quarterfinals. Poutchkova beat Germany’s Tanja Ostertag 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.

Track and Field

SAN FRANCISCO – Track coach Trevor Graham was charged with three counts of making false statements to federal agents in an indictment issued by the grand jury investigating performance-enhancing drugs in professional sports.

Graham, whose star pupils included Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery and Justin Gatlin, faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $750,000 fine if convicted. He was summoned to appear for arraignment Nov. 16 in U.S. District Court.

He operates Raleigh, N.C.-based

Sprint Capitol USA, a team of about 10 athletes that includes Gatlin, the 100-meter co-world record holder who tested positive for testosterone and other steroids in April.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –

David Garrard will make his second consecutive start at quarterback in place of Byron Leftwich on Sunday when the Jacksonville Jaguars host Tennessee.

Garrard led the Jaguars to a 13-6 victory at Philadelphia last week and improved to 5-1 as a starter the past two seasons.

PHILADELPHIA – Second-year defensive tackle Mike Patterson signed a seven-year contract extension worth $32 million that will make him a Philadelphia Eagle through 2016.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. –

Bowl center Olin Kreutz signed a contract extension that keeps him with the Chicago Bears through the 2010 season.

Soccer

SUWON, South Korea –

The U.S. soccer team defeated the Netherlands 2-0, but star Abby Wambach sprained her ankle and will likely miss the final of the Peace Queen Cup.

Lindsay Tarpley gave the Americans the lead in the 27th minute, and defender Cat Whitehill beat five players to score in injury time and set up the final with Canada on Saturday.
