OAKLAND, Calif. – Former VCU standout Brandon Inge swiftly opened the American League Championship Series with a third-inning home run, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 5-1 win over the Oakland Athletics.
The third baseman then doubled in a run in the fourth, scored another run, singled, and then walked in the final run in the Tigers’ eventual victory.
Inge became only the fifth “nine-hole” hitter to reach base in each of his plate appearances in a postseason game.
The 29-year-old homered off of left-hander Bary Zito-the key pitcher in the Athletic franchise. No player has started more games, won more games, or has been a more critical part of the Oakland Athletics than Barry Zito.
Game two was in Oakland last night and ended too late to include results in this edition.
The next ALCS game is in Detroit on Friday night.
