Officially celebrated April 22, the first Earth day took place in 1970. Approximately 20 million people participated in various events around the world and eventually lead to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act, the National Environmental Policy Act and the establishment of the president’s Council on the Environmental Quality.

Earth Day still has strong impact today on educating and empowering people to take action and preserve the quality of the environment for present and future generations.

Ten simple Earth Day tips for every day

1. Use reusable cups and dinnerware to reduce waste.

2. Use rechargeable batteries or items that have an AC adapter.

3. If you’re not recycling, contact your residence hall manager, landlord or local recycling services:

VCU-DEC: 827-7777 or www.vcu.edu/recycling.
CVWMA: 340-0900 or www.cwma.com.

4. Replace your light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. They last 10 times longer and will save you money and VCU energy in the long run.

5. Use public transportation: bicycle, walk and/or carpool to save energy and reduce greenhouse gases.

6. Buy products that are made with at least 25 percent post-consumer recycled materials.

7. Buy certified organic fruit, vegetables, milk, cereals and other products that are made through sustainable farming methods.

8. Volunteer in your community by assisting with green projects: Plant trees, flowers and maintain local parks.

9. Write you congressman or woman, state, or local representative with your opinions on legislation that will affect the quality of the environment.

10. Get involved with a local environmental or outdoor group that provides opportunities to learn and appreciate the natural wonders and wildlife in your area.
