This afternoon, the Office of the Governor announced an increase in the threat of terrorist conditions to Orange Level — High Threat, High Risk.

Editor’s Note: This letter was e-mailed to students Friday, Feb. 7, regarding the elevated terrorist threat level.

This afternoon, the Office of the Governor announced an increase in the threat of terrorist conditions to Orange Level — High Threat, High Risk.
By definition, this threat level indicates that there is “credible intelligence … that there is a high risk of a … terrorist attack but a specific target has not been identified.”

Pursuant to the notification by the Office of the Governor, we are advising all employees and students to report suspicious activities, packages, people and vehicles to your local police department. To report suspicious activity at the university or the Medical Center, please call the VCU Police at 828-1234.

If you plan on traveling, please be aware that you may encounter delays and/or searches of baggage. Finally, under these circumstances, it is incumbent on each of us to be more aware of our surroundings.

The intent of this communication is not to cause undue alarm, but to comply with procedures outlined by the Commonwealth’s Office of Virginia Homeland Security. Neither the university nor its Medical Center has received any threats. Thank you for your cooperation.
