Staff reports
The VCU volleyball team came up one game short of a CAA title on Sunday evening, losing to No. 1-seed Delaware in what became a five-set thriller.
The Rams and the Blue Hens went the distance with VCU winning the first and third sets and Delaware taking the odd sets. Delaware came through when it mattered, winning the deciding set 15-9.
Alissa Alker had a game-high 18 kills for Delaware and Katie Hank was second among all players with 15. For VCU it was senior Jessica Ojukwu and junior Kristin Boyd leading the way with 14 kills each, but in the end their efforts weren’t enough to win the conference championship and earn an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament.
The Rams are now 17-16 on the season with one game left to play, a non-conference match-up with Middle Tennessee.
