The CT obtained VCU and VCU Health’s payrolls for active employees through a Freedom of Information Act request. The data is publicly available information.
The CT requested “a comprehensive list of Virginia Commonwealth University/VCU Health System Authority’s payroll, to include employee names, titles, departments and salaries” in spreadsheet form.

The data was pulled in April 2026. The CT received the contents of the requests on April 22, 2026. The documents provided are direct copies of what VCU sent to The CT.
Employees earning $10,000 or less per year are not included, pursuant to Virginia state code. People employed by VCU Health’s nonprofit wing MCV Physicians are also not included, as nonprofits are not considered public bodies subject to FOIA.
The data does not reflect certain circumstances, such as the extra money some faculty earn for teaching summer courses. Some employees work on nine-month or shorter contracts, or are not allowed to exceed work hour thresholds as low as 10 hours per week.
Upon originally posting the payroll, numerous employees reached out to The CT saying their listed salaries did not reflect their true earnings. Multiple people pointed out gaps between their listed salaries and total earnings in tax year 2025 as wide as tens of thousands of dollars.
EDITOR’S NOTE: This data was provided by VCU and VCU Health through FOIA requests. State employee salaries are public information, and The CT published them in keeping with the practices of newspapers nationwide to promote transparency.
The CT remains committed to protecting the safety of our readers. The data may contain the deadnames of some employees. The CT is scrubbing the list to use people’s preferred names. To request that your name be updated, or your name removed out of safety due to certain circumstances, please email editor@commonwealthtimes.org.
Some readers have flagged that the listed salaries provided by VCU are inaccurate or do not reflect their true earnings. For the sake of transparency, The CT has added an “EARNINGS IN TAX YEAR 2025” column to the spreadsheets. To report your earnings or flag an error, please email editor@commonwealthtimes.org.
“Part-time wage data is shown as an annualized full-time amount, and may not be a reflection of actual employee earnings,” said VCU spokesperson Michael Porter. “Part-time schedules may vary. Any VCU employee who has questions about their individual salary data should reach out to askhr@vcu.edu.”
CORRECTION: The CT mistakenly did not compile VCU Health data into the original spreadsheet. That data has since been added through a second spreadsheet.
