APRIL 1 RECAP: How every VCU team did this week

Baseball vs. Norfolk State University

VCU hosted Norfolk State for a midweek matchup but was unable to secure a win. VCU held on to a 2-0 lead through four innings but Norfolk State was able to record three runs in the fifth inning. Despite the Rams ability to carry on their double-digit hits streak to six games, the Spartans scored two late runs in the top of the eighth securing their 5-3 win.  

Baseball vs. St. Bonaventure University — Weekend Series 

VCU swept St. Bonaventure in its Atlantic 10 series to extend its record to 16-11 overall and 8-1 in the A-10. 

The Rams won on Friday, 4-2. This game marked the Rams fourth-straight weekend with a victory and the fifth game allowing only one earned run in. The game remained at zero, until the fifth inning put the Rams up by three after a two-run home run. The Bonnies finally got on the board in the sixth, cutting VCU’s lead down to one. However, a late run gave VCU the two run win.

VCU elevated its second win to 13-3, claiming its third consecutive A-10 weekend series win. The Rams scored first in the first six innings taking a 10-0 lead. From there the Rams only continued to show off en route to a dominating win over the Bonnies.

The closing game was a much closer encounter, as VCU scraped by with a 6-5 win to complete the sweep. The Rams opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning. St. Bonaventure scored its first runs of the game, but VCU responded immediately to maintain its lead. The Bonnies had a three run inning to get the lead to 6-5, but the Rams stayed ahead to get the win.  

Lacrosse at George Washington University

The high scoring game 16-10 win was VCU’s fourth-straight, which is the best start in program history. The Rams started from the bottom as they trailed 4-2 with seven minutes left in the first quarter. However, the game quickly took a turn after a Rams goal took them to a 10-5 lead with 12 minutes left in the third quarter. The Revolutionaries cut VCU’s lead down to 10-7 but the Rams responded with three goals to close out the third. The fourth quarter went back-and-forth but the Rams led by at least five goals for the remainder of the game.  

Men’s tennis at Wichita State University

The Rams secured an impressive on the road victory over the nationally ranked Shockers 4-2. The match marked the teams first time facing off, giving the home advantage to the WSU. VCU secured both completed doubles match ups with strong performances on both courts. In singles play, the courts were filled with intense back-and-forth battles leading the outcome to be decided in the final match. Rams’ second-year Erwann Bouchet played with the match on the line until he delivered the final point, securing the Rams upset. 

Women’s tennis vs. the University of Richmond

The crosstown matchup marked the No. 21 meeting between the Rams and Spiders. VCU held onto their crosstown rivalry dominance as they defeated the Spiders 4-1. The victory keeps the Rams unbeaten in A-10 play. VCU looked strong in both signals and doubles play. Across the three doubles courts, VCU claimed all. VCU also took control of 3-6 singles plays, only giving one win to Richmond and two unfinished.

Men’s tennis at the University of Tulsa

The Rams were shutout on the road to Tulsa 0-4. The Golden Hurricanes dominated the Rams in both singles and doubles play. VCU gave up three straight-set singles wins and the doubles point. Two singles matches were left unfinished as the Rams were on top. Tulsa took advantage of the unfinished play and marked their territory the rest of the way.
