In an early season matchup of unbeatens at Sports Backers Stadium, women’s soccer knocked off UNCW 2-1 after a late strike by junior midfielder Karen Lohrmann.

Lohrmann ripped a low shot from outside the 18 to the far post past Shneider to put the Rams up in the 86th minute.

Junior midfielder Samantha Jerabek rocketed a shot in the 20th minute that UNCW’s goalkeeper Sydney Schneider saved, but redshirt-senior forward Amanda Tredway was there to hammer the rebound home. The tally was Tredway’s first of the 2019 campaign.

The Seahawks could not generate much offensively in the first half as the Rams outshot UNCW 8-3 at the half, including four on goal.

Possession was almost equal in the first 45 minutes, as the Rams edged the Seahawks 51-49%.

Jerabek had another scoring chance in the 52nd minute after she blasted the ball from just outside the 18, Schneider deflected it off the post. The Chesterfield, Virginia, native logged a team-high seven shots in the contest.

Minutes later, Tredway launched a shot off the far post in another scoring opportunity for the Rams.

“I saw a lot of grit,” coach Lindsey Martin said. “We had a little bit of bad luck to hit the post a few times. We should have put it away earlier, we let them back in and then to come back with Karen’s strike to go up with five minutes. Just a gritty performance, and that’s going to take us places.”

Sophomore forward Idelys Vazquez received a cross into the box, redirecting it to the far post, and it clipped the post going into Schneider’s hands, denying the Rams another goal in the 75th minute.

“We create a ton of attacking opportunities, so we’re not going to step away from what we do well and the goals are going to come,” Martin said. “We’re just going to keep creating chances.”

UNCW’s Morgan Nanni tied the game at one apiece with the ball bouncing off the crossbar and into the back of the net in the 78th minute.

After the Seahawks tied the match, the Rams remained composed on the field working toward another goal.

“I think that we’ve got experience. We’re more of a veteran squad, and sometimes bad things happen and teams tie it up,” Martin said. “You just have to refocus and get back to it, and that’s what our team did today.”

The Rams outshot UNCW 18-7 in the contest with six on frame. VCU edged the Seahawks in corners as well 9-6.

The Rams will travel to play at Wake Forest Thursday at 7 p.m.
