The VCU men’s golf team traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina to wrap up the fall season, competing in the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate the weekend of Oct. 25-26. The team finished sixth out of 13 before entering their four-month hiatus.
VCU placed sixth with a par of plus 18 and a total score of 882. The Rams shot 296 in the first round, 294 in the second and finished strong in the third with a score of 292. The Rams fell to Mercer University by only four points.
Junior Steffen Harm and sophomore Enej Sarkanj tied for 19th place at five over to pace the Rams. Both finished with a score of 221. Harm fired a team-best 70 in the tournament’s final round and also fired 11 birdies, four of which were in the final round. He shot below par in two of three weekend rounds. Sarkanj followed right behind Harm’s efforts and carded 71.
Junior Adam Ball, who shot a four-under 68 during Saturday’s second round, made a costly error when he was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. Ball finished 74th overall after not being allowed to participate in the third round.
While Ball was unable to compete, sophomore Hanish Nagrani finished tied for 42nd place with a combined score of 225. Sophomore Jamie Clare finished tied for 51st, with a score of 228 in three rounds of play.
The Rams improved their overall finish from last year’s event. Head coach Matt Ball’s team finished tied for ninth last year out of a field of 14.
University of North Carolina took the gold with an overall par of under 15 and a round total of 849. Virginia Tech followed behind the Tar Heels the whole match and scored 861.
The Rams have struggled the first half season finishing ninth of 15 and ninth of 18 back in September, but as the weather cooled down the Rams warmed up. The Rams went fifth of 13 at the Janney VCU Shootout and finished second of 12 at the Autotrader.com Collegiate Class when Clare hit under four and rode superior par five scoring to his first career top-five finish.
Now, the Rams will prepare for the spring season, which starts back up Feb. 23-24 at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
