The Richmond Police Department in conjunction with VCU Police arrested five people in connection with four recent robberies near the university, including Monday morning’s robbery in a private apartment building inside the core campus area.

VCU notified students via text message following two of the four robberies. Only Monday’s robbery involved students.

“We take all such incidents seriously and exceed notification requirements in an effort to give the community the information they need to keep themselves safe,” said VCU PD spokesperson Michael Kelly.

At approximately 5:30 a.m on Monday morning, two male students were robbed at gunpoint in a private apartment building. The suspect forced the victims from the building at 515 W. Main Street to a nearby 7-11 on the 200 block of West Main Street where one victim withdrew cash from an ATM to give to the suspect.

After receiving information about a possible suspect, VCU Police officer Chelsey Cocke detained 20-year-old Dominique A. Hackley and Richmond Police Fourth Precinct detectives Patrick Mansfield and John Walker charged him with counts of robbery and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Three arrests have also been made in response to a string of armed robberies that occurred off of the core campus of VCU between 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sep. 17 and into the early morning Wednesday, Sep. 18.

The first incident occurred at 8 p.m. on the 1500 block of North Lombardy Street, at the basketball court on Virginia Union University’s campus. The suspects demanded money and personal property from the victims, who were unharmed.

The second crime occurred later that night at approximately 10:50 p.m. Richmond City Police reported two unknown males robbed another male at gunpoint on the 1600 block of Grove Avenue.

The third incident occurred at approximately 12:55 a.m. on the 1500 block of Idlewood Avenue on Wednesday, Sep. 18. One male victim was transported to a location off campus after meeting the suspects near the Brandt and Rhoads Hall patio on campus. The victim was assaulted and robbed. The getaway car of the three suspects was last seen on the 1300 block of West Cary Street.
