VCU junior center D.J. Haley has requested some time off for personal reasons, head coach Shaka Smart said.

Haley was missing from the bench in VCU’s 81-65 win over Fordham Saturday night.

Smart confirmed that Haley was in no way in any type of trouble.

“It’s not in any way a suspension or anything like that,” Smart said. “He needs some time for himself im not sure exactly how long it’ll be.”

Haley, a Palmdale, Calif. native, is still in Richmond, Smart said.

“I’d be really surprised if he doesn’t come back with us,” Smart said. “It’s nothing bad, he hasn’t done anything wrong, he’s not doing poorly in school, it’s just some family stuff, some personal stuff he’s got to work out.”

Haley averaged two points per game and two rebounds over 22 games played this season.

After averaging 15.4 minutes a game in 2011-12, Haley’s minutes have been reduced to 8.7 this season. Haley played just 11 minutes over his previous three games.
