Women’s basketball beats Maine for second straight win

The VCU women’s basketball team had four players score double figures in a 74-58 win at Maine Saturday afternoon.

Robyn Parks had 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Rams to their second straight victory after starting the season with three straight losses.

VCU turned Maine over on its first three possessions at the start of the game and finished with 23 forced turnovers. The Rams jumped out to a 13-4 lead just under six minutes in after hitting five of their first seven shots from the floor.

VCU largest lead came with 4:16 left in the first half when the Rams took a 35-17 advantage thanks to a four-point play by senior Carleeda Green. They extended their lead to 17 points on three different occasions throughout the game.

Parks was one of seven different players to score on VCU’s roster and recorded her third straight double-double. She now has 46 points and 22 rebounds over the last two games.

Zakia Williams scored a career-high 16 points and had two assists and three steals. Her recent career-high was six points, which Williams has had twice already this season.

Freshman Kaneisha Atwater added a career-high of her own, scoring 11 points and three assists in her second straight start. Freshman forward Janniina Koivunen made her presence felt in the paint, scoring a career-high 11 points of her own.

The Rams shot 42.9 percent from deep, hitting six three-pointers, while out-rebounding their fourth straight opponent.

Brittany Williams led the Black Bears with 14 points, three rebounds and two steals.

VCU (2-3) visits Cleveland State (1-4) Nov. 28 and will return home Dec. 5 to host UMBC.
