Dear Rachel,
I want to get in shape and lose 10 pounds but I hate working out. I’ve tried to go to the gym regularly but I just can’t seem to keep it up. What should I do?
Tina the Talking Tummy
Tina,
I’m sure you’re a delightful person; there’s no need to lie about having a talking tummy. I know you want to lose weight, but that’s probably not P.C. for the people who do have talking tummies.
Anyway, getting in shape is never an easy task for people who hate it. If you hate something, why do it? I don’t understand that logic. Thus, the trick is to force yourself to love running, lifting, swimming or anything that happens in a gym or outside. If this sounds daunting, you’ll get over it.
If not, you will be a vegetable for the rest of your days, growing outwardly until you can’t fit through the door and you’re stuck inside forever. If that’s not your ideal future, follow these exercise tips to get you up and moving and motivated to get in shape:
•You have to eat better. Start off with a total kitchen purge. Get out the trash can and throw away your kitchen
·•Don’t rest for more than a few seconds when exercising, even when you’re feeling faint. It will only take away from your time getting into shape if you’re consulting a doctor about your fatigue
·•When you wake up in the morning make a smoothie to jumpstart your metabolism. Here’s my favorite recipe: three shots of espresso, one cup of Red Bull, 40 chocolate chips and blend to perfection.
•Sign up for at least 25 races that benefit different charities. That way, if you miss these races you’ll feel bad about yourself and the fact that you didn’t help the human race because instead you were watching 9 hours of “Law and Order.” This shame assures you won’t miss the other races.
•At work, try sitting on a ball instead of a chair. This will tone and shape your mid-section. I suggest a ping-pong ball, tennis ball or a donut hole for maximum results.
Exercise can be a fun activity and when all your friends are jealous of how good you look it’s even more fun. If you have any other trouble getting in shape and are looking for extra tips, try looking into books by Dr. Oz or order a subscription of “Cosmopolitan.” I hear they are both very reliable sources that women use to improve their quality of life.
Good Luck,
Rachel
