Bill Brown likes to keep tabs on VCU.

It’s no surprise considering men’s basketball head coach Shaka Smart is his former player and assistant, and just happens to be one of the most successful young coaches in the country.

“I’m always checking the scores, we’re talking on the phone,” Brown said. “I’ve gotten in the habit of looking on the left side of the column so you want to keep it on the left side of the column and keep that going.”

He saw VCU on the left side of the scoreboard a lot last March as he followed the Rams in their run through the NCAA Tournament. Brown was even given the opportunity to watch a man he calls “like a son” up close in personal as he sat directly behind the VCU bench at the Final Four.

“He made a lot of people proud,” Brown said. “And I know the best is yet to come for him.”

California (Pa.) Vulcans Game Notes

  • The Vulcans return four of their five starters from a 2010-2011 season that saw them go 15-12.
  • The guy to look out for tonight on California (Pa.) will be Steve Swiech, a 6-foor-9, 260-pound forward who transferred from Akron. The Vulcans big man averaged 12.2 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last year.
  • In his 15 seasons with the Vulcans, Brown has posted eight 20-win seasons.
  • Tonight’s game marks the first time in nearly a decade VCU will play an out-of-state opponent in an exhibition.
