The VCU men’s basketball fans that are most thirsty for three-pointers were undoubtedly crestfallen when last season’s senior sharpshooter, Brandon Rozzell, graduated from the program. B-Rozz’s knack for knocking down the long ball— mixed with his ceaseless smile— was legendary and made him the easiest of fan favorites.
Of course, the team still has another ascending three-point assassin rising through its ranks in junior Troy Daniels, who has scored twice as many points more in team workouts thus far this season than any other player and could fit right into the Rozzell’s old mold.
But when asked if he was trying to model his game off of Rozzell, Daniels took the harder yet, for him, more honest path in answering.
“I don’t. I actually say I don’t,” Daniels said. “I just want to start my own legacy. I just don’t want to really follow behind his footsteps. I want to learn from him of course. But I want to start my own legacy.”
So what does he plan to do differently with two years left in his college career? For starters, Daniels said he plans to diversify his capabilities by becoming more mobile and an on-the-ball guard ball as opposed to only looking to stop and pop.
“Putting it on the floor,” Daniels said about what he’s looking to improve on most this year. “A lot of people say I wasn’t good in that area; I wish that I thought I was … but I had two or three workouts a day this summer so I’ll definitely be ready (this season).”
