VCU vocal ensembles RAMifications and the Notochords will get to harmonize with university groups from across Virginia at this Friday’s Richmond Rhythm A Cappella Invitational at the Singleton Center.

The event was organized by VCU a cappella group RAMifications as a way to connect with a cappella groups from all over Virginia.

“It’s a day for us to hang out, build friendships, and talk about our groups,” said Amy Girardi, RAMifications president and event organizer. “It gives us a chance to improve our sound and get feedback from everyone attending.”

Girardi said she is looking forward to hearing James Madison University a cappella groups Low Key and Note-Oriety, the only groups returning to the event from last year.

Vocal groups from George Mason University and University of Mary Washington will also be in attendance.

All groups, including UMW’s BellaCapella and GMU’s GMUnit will come with five songs prepared and two songs to perform. Girardi says that the groups are going to try to cover a variety of genres, from “Sufjan Stevens all the way to Lady Gaga.”

The event was organized via word-of-mouth, with a campaign on Facebook to get the message out to other collegiate-level ensembles.

“We contacted over 25 groups and then just waited for the response,” Girardi said.

Girardi explained that RAMifications has been practicing three times a week and performing at various establishments like BoDillaz in preparation for the event.

“I am most looking forward to my first large performance as a member of the group, as well as meeting the groups from the other universities,” RAMifications alto Kathleen Shooltz said. “A cappella is always really entertaining, in my opinion, and it’s always fun to see what songs will be performed.”

The Richmond Rhythm A Capella Invitational  will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7 at the W.E. Singleton Center for Performing Arts on Park Avenue. Advance tickets are $3 for students and $5 for the general public. All tickets will be $5 at the door.
