Three people reported minor injuries Monday night when the floor of a house on the 2000 block of Idlewood Street collapsed around midnight.
According to the Richmond Fire Department’s public information manager, Lt. Shawn Jones, there were an estimated 60 to 100 people in the house when the main floor of the house fell about 10 feet into the home’s basement.
Only “very mild” injuries were reported, Jones said.
In 2008 on W. Cary Street, a balcony collapsed, leaving 19 college-aged people injured and another two seriously injured.
The deck was illegally built and was not inspected by the city. Without proper inspection, it was assumed that the cause of the collapse was simply poor construction that was not up to city building codes.
At the time of press, there was no report that ruled why the floor in the Idlewood Street house collapsed, but the building had been condemned by city building officials.
