A collective sense of fashion is something that sets VCU apart from other schools. Team sweatshirts and pajamas might be the norm at other schools, but even at 8 a.m. you’ll find no shortage of well-dressed, or at least “interesting,” students crossing our campus.
Freshmen often discover that the longer they live in Richmond, the more their own personal style evolves. No matter what route your style evolution takes, there are a few basics that every incoming freshman should incorporate into their closet. Take a look at your wardrobe and see what you already have, then fill in the holes with these tried and true basics as you go throughout the year.
For the girls:
1. Jeans: Denim works for every season and every body type. It’s casual, but always on-trend, and thus, you need several pairs that you love. Dark wash, straight leg styles are the most versatile, but a pair of cutoffs is also a summer necessity. If that’s too basic, go for colored denim or a pair of super trendy ’70s style flares.
2. Dresses: Dresses are the easiest way to look good with minimal effort because there is no coordination involved. Stocking up on a variety of styles, prints and colors will keep things from getting boring, but remember that a little black dress never fails. If you’re feeling daring, try a maxi dress to set yourself apart from a sea of sundresses.
3. T-shirts: No, not the kind you wear to the gym. A cotton or lace tee with a scoop or V-neck is flattering and timeless. Depending on how you style your tee, it can be transformed to fit any look. And like dresses, they’re essential for effortless style.
4. Blazer: If you have a presentation, interview or just feel like looking nice, a blazer is your best friend. Boyfriend styles, which are slightly loose, instantly polish off any outfit, whether it’s jeans and a tee, or a cocktail dress. Black or navy are the most versatile options, but red and white are great statement colors!
5. Boots: Richmond’s sidewalks and streets aren’t the most pedestrian friendly. They’re uneven, dirty and definitely not made for stilettos (though if you can pull it off, kudos to you). Boots are the perfect antidote, whether they’re combat style or cowboy boots. Try leather or suede styles in black or brown for the most versatility.
For the guys:
1. Jeans: It seems like a no brainer, but for guys, not all jeans are created equal. It’s safe to say that cargo jeans, oversized jean shorts and really baggy jeans are out of the question. Jeans don’t have to look painted on, but definitely invest in some well-fitting, dark-wash denim. Cutoffs are great for summer as well, but keep them just above knee-length.
2. Button-down Shirts: Even if you’re the most laid-back guy on earth, a few button-down shirts in solid colors are key. Wear them alone if you need to make a good first impression, or layer them over a fitted t-shirt for something more casual.
3. Every-season shoes: Leave your athletic shoes for the gym. With boat shoes, desert boots and even a classic pair of Vans or TOMS at your disposal, there’s no reason to break out your running shoes ever again (at least not in class).
4. Book bag: Girls have it easy with those giant purses; guys have to be a little more creative. Sure, a plain old Jansport book bag will suffice, but there are tons of cool, colorful book bags out there to set you apart from the crowd. One rule: No cross-body laptop bags. Nothing makes you look nerdier faster.
And a tip for everyone:
Even though our students aren’t walking VCU advertisements, do invest in at least one piece of VCU apparel. With our basketball team’s recent rise to fame, you’ll be looking pretty strange at games if you don’t sport some black and gold.
