Field hockey:
VCU’s field hockey team is proving to be something special.

The squad won both matches this past weekend, taking them up to a five-game winning streak. Perhaps more impressively, the team matched– and then exceeded– the program’s most amount of wins since 1993 with their wins Friday and Sunday.

Friday, the Rams defeated non-conference opponent Davidson 3-2 in Davidson, N.C. Sophomore forward Kelsey Scherrer scored the game winning goal in the 53rd minute. Sunday, the squad blanked Appalachian State 3-0 behind goals from Scherrer, freshman midfielder Rachel Whitt and senior midfielder Marle van Dessel.

Men’s soccer:
First-year head coach Dave Giffard and the Rams saw their 10-game unbeaten streak snapped at the hands of No. 20 William and Mary in Williamsburg.

VCU held their opponents scoreless through halftime for the third consecutive away game in conference play but were made to pay by Tribe player Alan Koger. Freshman forward Jason Johnson made his first start of his collegiate career in place of sophomore forward Yoram Mwila, who has been coping with an injury he incurred in the squad’s 1-1 tie vs. Longwood.

The Rams get back on the pitch in their final two conference home matches of the season when they face UNC Wilmington Wednesday and Drexel Saturday.
