Volleyball:
Volleyball split their opening weekend of CAA play, getting shut out 3-0 by Northeastern Friday and beating Hofstra 3-1 Sunday. The matches were played at Hanover and Cosby high schools, and the Rams record now stands at 3-14 overall.

Field hockey:
Field hockey won both their match ups this weekend — on the road — and ended an long losing streak in the process. An overtime goal from sophomore forward Kelsey Scherrer gave the Rams a 2-1 win, their first victory over the Blue Hens in eight tries. Sunday, VCU downed Towson 2-0 behind two more goals from Scherrer.

Golf:
VCU’s Athletics Office announced the school will be hosting the Verizon Wireless VCU Shootout Sept. 27-28 at the Hermitage Country Club. The 54-hole tournament will take place on Hermitage’s Manakin Course and will field teams teams including UNC Wilmington — who won the 2009 tournament — and other CAA rivals James Madison and Old Dominion.

Men’s basketball:
Former VCU forward Kirill Pischalinkova signed a professional contract with Russian side Spartak St. Petersburg. Pischalnikova played in nearly 100 games for the Rams during his tenure, tallying 301 points and 319 rebounds.

Track and field:
Senior Piotr Dybas led the way for VCU’s track and field team this past weekend at the Hagan Stone Park Invitational. Dybas led the Rams in a sweep of five of the top spots.
