The 2010 Mini-Economic Market Day was held Thursday morning in the Stuart C. Siegel Center: 1,100 elementary students, 56 teachers, 21 schools and 10 counties and cities around the Richmond area attended the event.
Students spent months prior to the marketing event learning about economics and financial literacy by developing products and marketing skills, according to Audrey Thomson, director of development for the Virginia Council on Economic Education.
“This is fun for them today but a real learning tool as well,” Thomson said. “It’s a fun time to take what they’ve learned and put it into practice.”
The market day was hosted by the VCU Center for Economic Education and the Virginia Council on Economic Education.
Suzanne Gallagher, the director for the center, read opening and closing statements.
A judges’ meeting was held before 30 products were selected to receive awards based on innovation and marketing competency. Judges represented seven local businesses and the two event sponsors: Genworth Financial and Martin’s.
One student from each class was also recognized with a “Class Entrepreneurs of the Year” award after being nominated by their teachers.
The presentation of the 30 awards marked the end of the market day.
