Coming off a big win against Virginia Tech last week, the VCU women’s basketball team (3-0) won two games at the Anaconda Sports “The Rock” SHU Basketball Classic at Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J.
“Our goal was to come in here and win this tournament,” VCU Coach Beth Cunningham said. “So, this was a step in the right direction. On Friday, the Rams defense put the clamps down defensively, holding the Arkansas State University Red Wolves to only 14 field goals winning the game 72-43.
La’Tavia Rorie (Charlotte, N.C./Harding University HS) led all scorers with 20 points and 11 rebounds and senior D’Andra Moss (Atlanta, Ga./Norcross) pumped in 16.
The Rams also received considerable help from their bench, which scored 19 points and tallied 29 rebounds.
On Saturday, Moss put on a show scoring her career-high 33 points leading the Rams to a 75-68 double-overtime victory over Morgan State.
Moss, who missed the entire second half of last season due to an ACL tear in her knee, was also huge in crunch time, scoring eight points in the second overtime alone.
Courtney Hurt (Conyers, Ga./Salem) and Rorie scored 12 and 11 respectively. As the Rams out rebounded the Bears 54-45.
VCU next plays East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. on Wednesday Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
