After taking as much as an 18-point lead in the first ten minutes of its game Wednesday night, VCU lost at Western Michigan by a score of 83-67.

“I’m really pleased with our guys’ effort for the first ten minutes,” VCU Coach Shaka Smart said. “We really got into the press we wanted to and did all we talked about doing this week in practice.”

The Rams shot an abysmal 30 percent from the floor in the game and an even more anemic 6-27 from the 3-point line.

Bradford Burgess (Midlothian/Benedictine) led the Rams in scoring with 16. Brandon Rozzell (Richmond/Highland Springs) and Jay Gavin (Seat Pleasant, Md./Marist) were also in double figures with 12 and 10 respectively.

Foul trouble was an issue for the Rams as Larry Sanders (Fort Pierce, Fla./Port St. Lucie) played only six minutes in the first half.

“The foul trouble really hurt our style and play and caused us to lose our aggressiveness on both the defensive and offensive ends of the court,” Smart said.

The Rams play No. 17 Oklahoma on Saturday at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
