VIDEO: China Celebrates 60 Years as ‘People’s Republic’

The People’s Republic of China celebrated its 60th anniversary during National Day festivities on Oct. 1.
This video examines the history of two key landmarks in Beijing, the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, in the months prior to the anniversary. Visitors are interviewed about the sites and their feelings on the state of China today.
2009 also marked the 20th anniversary of student protests at Tiananmen Square in 1989, which concluded with a still undetermined number of deaths.
In May, Dr. Judy Turk, director of VCU’s School of Mass Communications, and June Nicholson, Associate Director of the School of Mass Communications, accompanied 13 VCU graduate and undergraduate-level public relations and journalism students on a study abroad trip to Beijing and Shanghai.
