It has been eight years since the Republican Party ran the governor’s office in Virginia, the winning three Republican candidates snatched about 60 percent of the vote according to the Virginia State Board of Elections Web site.
Gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell, Republican candidate for Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling and Republican candidate for attorney general Ken Cuccinelli pulled ahead to win their separate elections.
According to VSBE, the voter turnout consisted of 1,975,684 of 4,713,061 (41.91 percent) of active voters and 1,975,684 of 4,955,755 (39.86 percent) of total voters.
The Republican victory overshadowed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds’ efforts, who held a rally at VCU Monday.
Deeds was joined by defeated Democratic candidates Jody Wagner for lt. gov. and Stephen Shannon for attorney general. The rally was hosted by Young Democrats in the University Student Commons.
