Photographer Glen McClure’s “Dominion Derby Girls” exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is the fountainhead for the museum’s annual college night. Capitalizing on the widely spread fascination with the underground cult sport, manager of adult and higher education Celeste Fetta has organized an evening of art, sport, music and entertainment this Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
VMFA continues its efforts to broaden the horizons of regional college students. Fetta said she wants the event to be a fun destination for learning and the goal of the event is to introduce students to the museum and kick off the school year.
Fetta, McClure and the museum have planned two and a half jam-packed hours. After a short introductory talk with the photographer, McClure will be featuring his entire studio in the parking garage next to the event. Any attendees inspired by the photography and the derby girls will be given the opportunity to pose with the team and be photographed by McClure. The top 15 shots will later be posted on VMFA’s Web site. After the photoshoot, the Dominion Derby Girls face off against the River City Roller Girls in a live match.
Raffle drawings for first, second and third place winners will take place around the track. Winners will be given a free VMFA student membership. The top prize, however, includes a personal portrait and roller derby paraphernalia.
