The New Boyz, made up of members Legacy and Ben J, have the best intentions on their debut album. However, it ultimately ends up being an album that even Soulja Boy would be disappointed in.
“Skinny Jeans” isn’t just an ode to their favorite fashion statement of the moment, it’s also a metaphor to how thin their content is. Focusing on the popular Los Angeles originated dance movement “Jerkin,” the New Boyz’ production is made up of sparse drum patterns over equally simple melodies.
The problem is, this sound is so marinated over the album that every single song sounds the same. It’s almost detestable that popular producers such as Jim Jonsin (who produced hits for T.I. and Lil’ Wayne) could give out such B-grade quality tracks . but then again we are talking about the New Boyz.
The listener will either hear the young MC’s rap about how many girls they have, the extent of their popularity or, of course, how much money they have.
I will say that the standout track on this dismal LP is their hit single “You’re a Jerk,” which seems like a breath of fresh air in comparison to the rest of the songs that are offered on the album.
Much like the tight fitting jeans they name drop endlessly, the New Boyz’ first album will probably be out of style next year-just like any fad. It will take a little longer to see if this group will go with it.
