The Richmond Folk Festival will have stages at Brown’s Island and between Second and Tredegar streets next to the American Civil War Center Friday evening through Sunday evening. Admission is free. For more information visit www.richmondfolkfestival.org.

Clinton Fearon, lead singer of Clinton Fearon and The Boogie Brown Band, said he could recall a show 10 years ago when parents were hesitant to let their children receive a drumming lesson from him and his band.

“Before the show started, it felt like we were behind a fence,” Fearon said. “The kids came right up, but the parents wouldn’t let them up on stage.”

Once the band started to play, both parents and children were dancing and having a great time, Fearon said. The band, which has traveled throughout Europe, South America and the states, said they hope to spread the same cheer when they perform at the fifth annual Richmond Folk Festival this weekend.

Joshua Kohn, the programming director for the Richmond Folk Festival, said this is an opportunity for visitors to see music from around the world.

“You won’t see Jerry Douglas, followed by a traditional funk band, next to a Russian throat singing group on the same stage for free anywhere else,” Kohn said.

Kohn said while the festival does not have one specific theme, they want people to not only learn something, but have fun as well.

“We want people to come out and have a good time the whole weekend long,” Kohn said.
