Artist carves path to success

Roberto Celis grabs a chainsaw and heads toward an unsuspecting pile of sawdust. Under the dust are chairs and sculptures, created by Celis and his chainsaw, which, after hours of hard work, will become unique works of art.

Celis grew up in Annandale, N.J. and came to Virginia to start his freshman year of college. He is now very active in the VCU community, serving as student body vice-president of the Student Government Association, president of Theology on Tap, a club that discusses religious and spiritual matters, and a club soccer player. But having grown up around his handyman of a father, Celis knew wood working was what he wanted to do.

“I loved watching my dad make shelves and other projects for the house since I was a little kid. After he was done working, I would go and clump the sawdust into balls and throw them as hard as I could and watch them vanish into thin air,”
